Elementary Electronic Structure of Solids (6 CFU)

Elementary Electronic Structure of Solids (6 CFU)

Docente: Liberato Manna
Periodo di svolgimento: Febbraio-luglio
This course presents an introduction to the electronic structure of solids. The course covers some basics of crystallography and then studies solids with two approaches: 1. The free and then nearly free electron model; 2. The tight binding approach. The first methodology is more appealing to physicists, the second to chemists and materials scientists, who are used to deal with atomic and molecular orbitals. The two approaches actually converge, and their synthesis gives a more in-depth explanation of phenomena in solids. In many instances, various properties of solids will be predicted based on simple formulas which depend on chemical parameters (for example polarity, covalency, bond lengths, etc.).
