Research spans computational chemistry, structural biochemistry, computational biophysics, molecular design and drug discovery. The goal is to unveil the relationships among structure, dynamics, and molecular recognition in biomolecules through the development of computational methods and use this knowledge to design new chemical entities.

The research activities can be summarized in three different areas, characterized by a high degree of complementarity: chiral nanostructures, controlled synthesis of functional polymers and p-conjugated organic materials, for applications in the energy, biomedical and environmental fields.

The generation of reactive intermediates, including radicals, cations and diradicals, is realized upon direct irradiation or in the presence of a photocatalyst, often using visible light or natural sunlight. These species are then exploited in sustainable synthesis, in the field of materials or in possible biological applications.

Engineering and synthesis of selective ligands for nucleic acid (NA) secondary structures and sequences (DNA and RNA) by innovative strategies of modern organic synthesis, for targeted diagnostic and therapeutic applications (anticancer, antiviral, antiparasitic and antibacterial). The goal is to develop "molecular tools" for: • Sensing• Stabilization /Destabilization • Structural modification of NA secondary structures by external stimuli (oxidative and photochemical stress).
Team members: prof. Mauro Freccero, prof. Filippo Doria, Dr. Valentina Pirota (Fixed-term researcher type A).
Postdoctoral research fellows: Dr. Alessio Maria Caramiello.

Evaluation of metabolite profiling of selected sprout extracts using two different analytical approaches, i.e. LC-MS and NMR, with the aim to detect a wide range of compounds. The crude extracts were investigated by LC-UV to obtain separation and quantitation of the different metabolites; LC-MS analyses allow the identification of the compounds in the complex mixtures. The whole extracts and purified compounds are investigated by high resolution 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy through multi-dimensional omo- and hetero-nuclear NMR experiments. In collaboration with Dr. Aldo Tava, CREA, Lodi.
