The physico-chemical characterization of compounds in the solid phase is of fundamental importance in the pharmaceutical preformulation phase due to the repercussions it can have on the drug development and represents the essence of this line of research.
The research activity makes use of thermal, spectrophotometric, diffractometric and scanning electron microscopy techniques. The unusually high level at which the thermal techniques are employed is notable, thanks to the special attention paid to the experimental aspects of the measurements (sample preparation, measurements conditions) and the theoretical ones related to the quantitative processing of the results. This allows us to fully exploit the potential of the techniques and obtain information that often could hardly be obtained with other means of investigation.
The expertise gained in the use of these techniques and the long experience in the pharmaceutical field are the basis for the activity of problem solving in the pharmaceutical industry.
The main topics investigated concern polymorphism/pseudo-polyorphism/amorphism, drug-excipient interactions, and the search of strategies aimed at improving the solubility and other properties of drugs.
